Middle Grade Releases I'm Excited About
The last week I have heard about so many new and upcoming middle grade releases and I'm so excited. I don't know exactly when I'll get around to reading them all, but they're too good not to share all in one place!

Draper - Releases November 9, 2021 - From the author of "Out of My Mind" comes a sequel where our protagonist Melody is a year older and is headed off to summer camp.
A Soft Place to Land by Janae Marks - September 14, 2021 - I love, love, loved From the Desk of Zoe Washington. So I'm excited about this new story from Janae Marks about a girl who has to move from a home to an apartment because her dad lost his job. But there's a mystery afoot and new friendships to be made.
Kaleidoscope by Brian Selznick - September 21, 2021 - I loved The Invention of Hugo Cabret (and the movie Hugo!) and the description of Kaleidoscope has me intrigued: "A ship. A garden. A library. A key. In Kaleidoscope, the incomparable Brian Selznick presents the story of two people bound to each other through time and space, memory and dreams. At the center of their relationship is a mystery about the nature of grief and love which will look different to each reader. Kaleidoscope is a feat of storytelling that illuminates how even the wildest tales can help us in the hardest times."
Room to Dream by Kelly Yang - September 21, 2021 - Our feisty protagonist from Front Desk is back in her third book. Lots of changes are happening in Mia's life, and her family's going on a vacation to China.
The Vanderbeekers Make a Wish by Karina Yan Glaser - September 21, 2021 - the 5th book in the Vanderbeekers series. It's summer on 141st Street, and the Vanderbeekers are looking forward to Papa's surprise fortieth birthday party. But then Papa must leave town to help his best friend and the Vanderbeeker children are surprised to find their maternal grandparents on their doorstep. What will happen?
The School for Whatnots by Margaret Peterson Haddix - March 2022 - This author is prolific and I am excited about her latest installment with a whole new setting and cast of characters. It sounds mysterious and fascinating!
Pony by R.J. Palacio - September 28, 2021 - From the author of Wonder comes "an enthralling adventure that will show readers how to choose courage. A modern classic about a boy on a quest to rescue his father, with only a ghost as his companion and a mysterious pony as his guide." And I'm here for it!
Set Me Free by Ann Clare LeZotte - September 21, 2021 - In this stand-alone sequel to Show Me A Sign, Mary is three years older. She's been called upon to teach an 8-year-old deaf girl with no prior language skills how to communicate with sign language. The stakes are higher than she's anticipated.
Willodeen by Katherine Applegate - September 7, 2021 - from the author of books I've loved like The One and Only Ivan and Wishtree comes "A timely and timeless tale about our fragile earth, and one girl's fierce determination to make a difference." There's magical creatures and a fantasy setting with an environmental message.
Poison for Breakfast by Lemony Snicket - August 31, 2021 - True confession, I've not read any of the Series of Unfortunate Events. I might remedy that "unfortunate" situation, but in the meantime this newest book has me intrigued. I mean, read this quote from the book description, "Over the course of his long and suspicious career, Mr. Snicket has investigated many things, including villainy, treachery, conspiracy, ennui, and various suspicious fires. In this book, he is investigating his own death." Are you not intrigued??!?!
One Kid's Trash by Jamie Sumner - August 31, 2021 - I loved Roll with It and now I'm excited to read this newest book from Sumner that tells the story of a boy who uses his unusual talent for decoding people's trash to try to fit in at his new school. I mean, sounds odd, but could be interesting! I've definitely not read that premise before!
Sunny Days Inside by Caroline Adderson - August 3, 2021 - I heard about this book from Rab Ferguson on the Big Kids Book Club podcast. It's short stories about different residents in an apartment building and how they're responding to the pandemic. Sounds thought-provoking.
Into the Lion's Mouth by Nancy McConnell - September 7, 2021 - This historical fiction novel is a love letter to Venice. I got to interview Nancy recently and she's going to be on an upcoming episode of the podcast. I've actually already read this one, and loved it.
